What headings do
H1, H2 and H3 are HTML elements that express heading levels. They are not chosen only for visual size: they describe how content is organised. CSS controls styling; meaning determines the hierarchy.
H1: the main topic
The H1 introduces the page’s central subject in a clear sentence. On a typical page, one clear H1 is usually the simplest way to orient readers and assistive technology. It is a useful convention, not a formula that by itself improves rankings.
H2 and H3: sections and subsections
Use H2 for main sections and H3 for subtopics that belong to an H2 section. If you need more levels, use H4 and beyond while keeping the hierarchy logical. Do not skip levels just to get a different font size.
Example outline
H1: Web design for a clinic in Girona
H2: What the project includes
H3: Structure and content
H3: Mobile-friendly design
H2: How the process works
H2: Frequently asked questionsUse keywords naturally
Include words that accurately describe the content when they help the reader. Repeating “web design Girona” in every heading adds no clarity. Each heading should preview the section that follows.
H1 and the title tag are different
The H1 is the visible title inside the page. The <title> tag belongs to the HTML document and is commonly shown in the browser tab; it is also one of the sources Google may use for a result title. They can be similar, but they have different jobs.
Do headings improve rankings?
A clear hierarchy improves reading and can help search engines interpret the page. Google also considers headings among several sources when generating result titles. That does not mean H1, H2 or H3 alone will improve rankings: useful, high-quality content, competition and other factors matter too.
A quick review
Check that the main title is descriptive; each H2 matches a real section; H3 headings develop the right H2; the outline makes sense when you read the headings alone; and CSS controls the visual styling.
In short
Think of headings as the outline of a conversation: first the topic, then the main ideas, then their details. A structure that helps people also gives search engines clearer context.
